StartEDIN: Diddo Interview

Tell us about your company and what you do?

Diddo was born in response to the Scottish Government lead CivTech challenge. CivTech is an accelerator to drive innovation within the public sector. Diddo won the cyber wildcard, which included office space in Codebase, £15,000 grant funding and access to an incredible network of individuals, workshops, mentoring and guidance.

The directors have an intelligence and security background and are all ex-government or ex-military. Therefore, we understand the problems around the protection of individuals online. Using our knowledge and experience, we identified areas where we could help by implementing a software solution.

The product is a cyber security software toolbox with build in e-learning. The are 5 areas within the application toolbox: social media security, browser configuration, password education, online profile and real time analysis.

Diddo’s primary aim is to delivery simplified innovation to the end user by providing a software product which can give piece of mind by protecting and securing an individual’s online life.

What’s your role within the company? What’s the best thing about this role?

Sales and Marketing Director. I drive sales and marketing activities and identify opportunities for company growth. Diddo is still very much a 5 ‘til 9 company for the time being – however we are looking to become full-time with Diddo in late 2017 as well as taking on several other staff in early 2018.

What advice would you give to people looking to pursue a career in tech in Edinburgh?

a. Engage in the Edinburgh Tech network early. It’s never too soon! Meetup and Eventbrite are good places to start. A strong LinkedIn profile is key to the networking process.

b. Ask. People will generally give you the time for advice and guidance.

Why Edinburgh? What are the benefits of living/ locating/ starting your business here?

Edinburgh is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. An incredible place to start a business. Being relatively small allows Edinburgh to be a hive of cross pollination of innovation and ideas throughout all areas of the tech and business community.

Codebase is a great place to have an office. We have developed great relationships with the Codebase community which will stand us in good stead when we scale in 2018.

What are your growth ambitions for 2017?

In 2017 we will take on up to 8 local authorities as clients. Diddo will be deployed to them in October ’17.

Diddo has won a place on EIE17, an investor showcase and is also taking part in Scottish Edge Round 10 – to obtain further funding.
